About

I work as the librarian of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers in Newcastle upon Tyne.  I’ve been there since 2006 and there is still plenty to do!

I am a solo librarian and I do miss the opportunity to chat to people who understand the challenges so I’m hoping the electronic environment will fill the gap.

    Hi
Noted that that you are having some OCR’d items being proof read by volunteers.

    1) Is there a NoEIoM&ME library catalogue that can be reviewed?
    2) Is there a proposed to “Scan/digitise & OCR” project list?
    3) Have any of the “Proceedings of the Association of Mining Electrical Engineers” or The mining electrical engineer : Official journal of the Association of Mining Electrical Engineers, or Mining Technology – Official journal of the Association of Mining Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, been digitised or are they planned to be?

    Thx
    Rob

    • Hi Rob,
Sorry, I didn’t spot this comment sooner!
There is indeed an online catalogue at http://opac.mininginstitute.org.uk/ which mainly contains listings for the book collections. I am working on updating a database of journal listings which would include the Association of Mining Electrical Engineers holdings. These updated journal holdings will hopefully also go onto the online catalogue soon, as well as up onto SUNCAT.

We do indeed use volunteers for many jobs including proof reading OCR’d text but we can only scan, OCR and upload things for which we have copyright clearance so therefore I have been concentrating on our own transactions and archival material for now. Is there a particular article you are looking for? Tracking down the current copyright owners can be very time consuming and tricky! Not one of my favourite parts of the job.
